ರಾಮಾಯಣ-ಮಹಾಭಾರತಾದಿ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯಗಳನ್ನೂ ಪುರಾಣಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಹೇಗೆ ನೋಡಬೇಕು, ಅರ್ಥೈಸಬೇಕು, ಅವುಗಳ ಆಶಯವನ್ನು ಯಾವ ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ರಹಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ‘ಆಧುನಿಕ’ರಾದ ನಮ್ಮೆದುರಿನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ. ವರ್ತಮಾನದ ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಇಂದಿನ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ-ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ-ರಾಜಕೀಯ-ವ್ಯಾವಹಾರಿಕ ಆಗುಹೋಗುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರಿತವಾಗಿರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿ, ಮರು-ನಿರೂಪಿಸಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಒಂದು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವಾದರೆ; ಅವುಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಆಯಾ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನೋಡಿ, ಮೂಲ ಆಶಯಗಳನ್ನು ಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ, ವರ್ತಮಾನದ ಬದುಕು-ಭಾವಗಳಿಗೆ ಪುಷ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಮತ.
